casey harrell was in his mid forties when als had taken most of his speech. the disease wears down the nerves that drive the muscles, and the voice is often among the first things it takes. by the time he enrolled in the trial at uc davis, the people who loved him were struggling to understand him.

an app called crimeradar lets software listen to police frequencies and turn the chatter into alerts on its own. that night it heard an officer say shop with a cop, the name of a charity event where police take kids holiday shopping. it published shot with a cop.
the company has apologized, and the app is still running. police departments in several states have warned residents that its posts are not reliable, because it routinely mishears addresses and turns preliminary radio traffic into confident, alarming stories.
the trouble is structural, not occasional. there is no dispatcher checking the transcript before it goes out. the speed that makes the app feel useful is the same speed that sent a city a lie.

on the doorstep they left a note. it read, no data centers. gibson and his eight-year-old son were inside and were not hurt. the bullets struck steps from the dining table where, the day before, his son had been building with legos.
data centers have become a target for a range of anti-tech and anti-development anger, and police are treating this as a targeted incident with the fbi assisting. who fired the shots, and exactly why, is not yet established in court.
the broader signal is not about one councilor. the buildout that ai requires has to land somewhere physical, in someone's district, near someone's home. the argument over that footprint has reached the point where it arrives by gunfire.

this spring a cafe opened on a corner in the vasastan district of stockholm. a company called andon labs, the same group behind an earlier ai that ran a vending machine into the ground, handed the whole operation to an ai it named mona. mona takes orders, keeps the books, and reorders supplies.
the cafe gets about one customer an hour. mona, undeterred, bought three thousand nitrile gloves, six thousand napkins, four first-aid kits, and cans of tomatoes that match nothing on the menu, for a room that is almost always empty.
the baristas, who are human, started a hall of shame, a shelf where customers can see the strangest things mona has ordered. the likely cause is mundane and a little profound. mona's short-term memory fills up, the earlier orders fall out of view, and it buys them again.
it is the funniest version of a serious limit. a system can look like a manager and still not remember what it did an hour ago. left alone with a budget, that gap fills a back room with gloves.

a tenth grader in palo alto wrote an essay about the crucible. his teacher ran it through turnitin, whose ai detector flagged seventy six percent of it as likely written by ai. he said he wrote it himself.
his family kept everything, the drafts, the notes, the full revision history of the document, and handed the school a packet that ran to one thousand one hundred and sixty two pages. the school had him rewrite the essay by hand in class anyway, and gave him a d, which pulled his grade down to a c.
the family has now sued in federal court. the suit alleges the punishment fell hardest on multilingual asian and male students in the same class. those are allegations in a complaint, not findings.
the load-bearing problem is older than this case and bigger than one detector. a tool that its own maker admits is fallible was treated as proof, deployed by a single teacher, with no standard threshold and no reliable way for a wrongly accused student to clear his name.
the new wrinkle is not a generic scam voice. it is a specific, real doctor's likeness, taken and made to say something he never said.

the doctor on the screen was dr. pierre kory, a real and public physician. it was not him. scammers had taken his face and voice and rebuilt them with ai to lend a fraud the authority of a name people already believed.
deepfake fraud is usually reported as a single huge number, the fbi says people over sixty lost about $4.9 billion to cybercrime in one year. the sharper, harder version is one named retiree, one stolen face, and a future for a child that vanished on a doctor's word the doctor never gave.
